PARENT INVOLVEMENT - Greenwood 51
In accordance with Federal regulations section 200.34 Greenwood School District 51 as a recipient of Title I funds will consult with parents and teachers of the children being served, including parents and teachers of children being served in private schools, if appropriate. Notification of the planning process, including solicitation of questions, comments, and input will be given at least one week prior to the planning meeting.
To meet the consultation requirements Greenwood School District 51 shall design and implement activities to ensure that parents of children being served have an adequate opportunity to participate in the design and implementation of the Greenwood School District 51 Title I plan.
District parent activities include, but are not limited to, the following:
A. Involve parents in the development of the Title I plan, the parent involvement policy, and the process of school review and improvement.
1. Parents will be involved in the development of the plan by participating on schoolwide planning committees and school improvement councils.
2. Parents will be involved in the process of school review and improvement through a fall Title I Parent Orientation meeting, Parents that serve on the schoolwide planning teams and school improvement councils are involved in school review and improvement because these committees review the school’s state test data when it is released by the state.
B. Provide coordination, technical assistance, and support to the schools for effective parent involvement to improve student academic achievement and performance.
1. Provide parents with the opportunity to maintain ongoing communications among parents, teachers, and LEA officials through planned school visitation programs.
2. To the extent possible, provide information, programs, and activities for parents in a language and form they can understand.
3. Provide materials and suggestions through calendars and newsletters to parents to help them promote the education of their children. Timely information about the program also will be provided in the newsletters.
4. A district committee will assist with coordination of Title I Parent Involvement Plan and activities.
5. Public notice concerning the LEA plan will be provided through our district web page and school meetings.
6. Work with schools to develop parenting nights at each elementary school.
C. Build the schools’ and parents’ capacity for strong parent involvement.
1. Maintain strong communication between school and home.
2. Establish parent volunteer programs.
3. Involve parents in the decision-making process through organizations such as the PTA/PTSO, school improvement councils, and schoolwide planning committees.
4. Develop school-parent compacts and parent involvement policies with the parents of participating children.
a. describe the school’s responsibility to provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables children served to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards
b. describe the ways in which each parent will be responsible for supporting their children’s learning
c. address the importance of communication between teachers and parents on an ongoing basis
5. Provide materials and training to help parents to work with their children to improve their children’s achievement.
6. Educate teachers, principals, and other school staff, with the assistance of parents, in the value of parental involvement.
7. To the extent possible, provide information, programs, and activities for parents in a language and form they can understand.
8. Provide such other reasonable support for parental involvement activities as parents may request.
D. Coordinate and integrate parental involvement under Title I with parental involvement with local agencies.
E. Conduct, with the involvement of parents, an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the parental involvement policy in improving the academic quality of the Title I schools.
1. Utilize the End of the Year Parent Evaluation to identify barriers to greater participation by parents. The End of the Year Parent Evaluation is also used to improve the parent program at the schools for the following school year.
2. Survey parents to identify any barriers to attending school parenting events, and develop plans to address those issues.
F. Involve parents in the activities of the schools.
1. Convene an annual fall meeting at each school at which the following items will be discussed. A flexible number of meetings will be offered.
a. Inform parents of their school’s participation under Title I and to explain Title I, its requirements, and their right to be involved.
b. Parents have the right to consult in the design of the Title I plan through a planning questionnaire and recommendation forms.
c. Parents have the right to consult in the design of the Title I plan and in the process of school review and improvement through surveys.
d. Parents’ input will be solicited; observations and comments will be recorded in the minutes of the meeting.
e. Parents will be given a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
2. Report to each child’s parents on the child’s progress by sending frequent reports home. Reports will include informal weekly teacher newsletters, monthly newsletters and end of each grading period reports.
3. Establish conferences between individual parents and teachers by scheduling at least one conference with parents or guardians of children enrolled in Title I activities.
a. Provide to parents of participating students the school’s performance profiles.
b. Provide to parents of participating students their child’s individual student assessment results.
c. Provide parents with timely information about Title I programs.
d. Solicit parents’ suggestions in the planning, development, and operation of the program by sending a planning questionnaire to all parents.
